Hacked firmware enables you to play PS3 games like Battlefield 3 on the PS Vita

One of the neatest features of the PS Vita (and, indeed, the PSP) is the Remote Play option.

In theory, Remote Play lets you stream games directly from your PS3 onto the smaller screen of your portable, allowing you to play titles over wi-fi even if you aren't in the same place as your home console.

I say 'in theory', because the selection of games that actually work using this streaming method is sadly limited to titles that worked with the PSP - you can run Pixel Junk Shooter, for instance, but not Rayman Origins or Rage.

One enterprising soul, though, has used a hacked firmware version of the Vita to circumvent whatever barriers Sony had put in place to stop such a thing happening, thereby making it possible for you to stream big blockbusters like Battlefield 3 to the portable.

The third place?

Given how feisty Sony is with its firmware updates (we've updated our review Vita a good three times already, for instance), we'd imagine the hack will be stamped out long before the machine hits our shores.

However, given the similarity of the controls between the Vita and PS3, and the fact that Sony itself showed off Killzone 3 running through Remote Play at the Tokyo Game Show last year (thanks, NowGamer), it must surely only be a matter of time before the Vita can officially stream retail PS3 titles.
