If you're a fan of subtlety and understatement, then you're probably not a fan of Gameloft.

If, however, you like explosions, jet packs, and mobile games inspired by console classics, you should definitely read on.

That's because Gameloft's excellent N.O.V.A. 3 and not-so-excellent Gangstar Rio: City of Saints are free on the App Store right now.

With N.O.V.A. 3, Gameloft has taken its cues from the Halo and Crysis games, casting you as a suit-clad super-soldier battling against a conglomerate of evil aliens.

It's big and dumb and the controls aren't great, but if you're looking for a sci-fi FPS for your iPhone or iPad, you could do an awful lot worse.

There's a pretty decent multiplayer mode here, too, if you prefer shooting your friends to shooting alien invaders.

With Gangstar Rio: City of Saints, meanwhile, Gameloft pays homage to the likes of GTA and Saints Row. It's all about wandering round a city sandbox environment and engaging in various criminal activities.

You'll intimidate bystanders, shoot people in the face, and drive around like you're the cock of the walk.

It's a bit humourless, and the action can fall flat, but it's probably worth a punt now that it doesn't cost anything.

Free for all

So, if you fancy some simple, attractive violence over the weekend, why not grab N.O.V.A. 3 [download] or Gangstar Rio: City of Saints [download] from the App Store.

After all, you've got nothing to lose. Except time.
