Millennial Media's decision to switch from monthly reports to quarterly reports means big shifts in the mobile landscape are now far easier to spot.

While Microsoft's hand in the US smartphone market has, until now, been nothing to write home about, Millennial's assessment of the market in Q2 2012 suggests that, slowly but surely, Windows Phone is gaining an audience.

Four for all

The firm's numbers place Microsoft's share of the smartphone OS mix is at 4 percent – a low figure compared to iOS on 34 percent and Android on 46 percent.

Crucially, however, the Windows figure – which likely also includes old Windows Mobile handsets – is up fourfold from the 1 percent share Microsoft boasted at roughly the same point in 2011.

It's worth bearing in mind that smartphone market itself has grown substantially during that time, suggesting the actual number of Windows Phone handsets is up significantly year-on-year.

The figures come as Microsoft gears up to launch Windows Phone 8, set to be led by Nokia's Lumia 920.

Though such growth will be encouraging for both parties, the OS still remains a bit-part player in a market dominated by just two players: Android and iOS.
