If there's one misconception that Americans must endure from their European cousins, it's that we - as a people - expect football players across the world to wear helmets and crash headlong into each other.

The strong, record-breaking sales of FIFA 13 on its North American launch day should put that misconception to rest, as the Pocket Gamer Silver Award-winning game sold 353,000 copies for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on its opening day.

While Electronic Arts did not disclose the specific sales numbers for iOS downloads, it proudly noted that FIFA 13 boasted the best launch-day performance of any EA title on the App Store and was up 62 per cent from FIFA 12's launch day sales.

Pitch perfect

At time of writing, FIFA 13 enjoys a four-and-a-half star rating in the US App store based on 527 reviews.

No doubt the positive reviews are in response to the addition of an online multiplayer mode, a first for FIFA on iOS, and the new control gestures that allow you to tweak your team's tactics in the middle of the game.

FIFA 13 is now available worldwide on the App Store for $6.99 / £4.99
