Broken Sword 2 getting Remastered for iPhone and iPad

Revolution Software has announced its third game for iPhone: a remastered and reinvigorated version of 1997 PC and PlayStation point-and-click adventure Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror.

The game sees Broken Sword heroes George Stobbart and Nico Collard stumble into another globe-trotting adventure, this time based in South Africa. There are more secret gangs, conspiracy theories, and ancient artefacts, but this time George has a Hawaiian shirt on.

The game remains largely intact (hence the moniker 'Remastered' instead of Broken Sword’s 'Director’s Cut'), but it still has plenty of new features. The graphics have been spruced up, as has the music, and the game’s got a context-sensitive hint system to help you out if you get stuck.

Interestingly, the game uses Dropbox integration so you can back up your save games on the web, and even sync your progress across multiple devices. The game also features achievements through Game Centre and Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons is back to give it an interactive digital comic.

Another interesting point: the game will see a PC and Mac release (next year), but won’t visit the DS and Wii like the first game. Not surprising, since Director’s Cut’s sales were abysmal. “Publishing through the App Store has offered us huge opportunities," says series creator Charles Cecil, noting the direct communication with fans, and fast development times.

Broken Sword 2 doesn’t quite hit the same highs as the incredible original game, but it’s still a clever, funny and often exciting adventure game. If you enjoyed Shadow of the Templars, you’ll definitely fall in love with its sequel.

The game will hit iPhone, iPod touch and iPad "very shortly".
