Avoid: Sensory Overload is a dodge 'em up for iOS with a hover ship disco visuals

Though popular (especially at PG), arcade dodge 'em ups don't seem to have reached their peak, and we haven't gotten bored of them yet.

Case in point: Avoid: Sensory Overload, which I confess I'm struggling to pull myself away from just now to write these words.

Despite the title, Avoid isn't quite the attack on your senses that Super Hexagon or Wave Wave is. It's definitely the same type of game, though.

You tap the left or right side of the screen to move the little hover ship through the tunnel of beat-charged disco visuals, and that's all your thumbs do.

The challenge comes in being in the right place at the right time. You need to fly over pink squares to drop walls so you don't crash into them, avoid huge holes in the floor, and dodge huge bullets.

Sometimes you even have to pick up a weapon to blast cubes out of the way.

As your ship is constantly travelling forward, gaining speed incrementally, levels get harder the farther you travel. The Easy levels really are easy. Disappointingly so, almost.

But if you whack the game up to Hard or Extreme you'll discover that, in fact, Avoid can be chaotic. You need to learn level layouts and match that with quick reactions to win.

If you want, there are also randomly generated Endless levels to try out. They can be good for practice.

Avoid: Sensory Overload is a decent dodge 'em up. Certainly not the best, but if you're a fan of the genre then it's worth checking out. It'll be coming to iOS on Thursday.
