Assassin's Creed DS named as Altair's Chronicles

A few details on Ubisoft's forthcoming Assassin's Creed game for DS have emerged, including the game's full title - Assassin's Creed: Altair's Chronicles.

The game will prequels the multi-million selling PS3 and Xbox 360 experience and explores more of lead character Altair's history in the Crusade's Middle East. More of his back story will be revealed throughout the game's plot as players guide Altair through four cities to find the Chalice - an object of power said to have the ability to end the Crusades.

Altair's Chronicles is in development by Gameloft, the studio which also created the impressive Assassin's Creed game for mobile. The screenshots indicate it will look and play quite differently on DS and take place in 3D as opposed to 2D environments.

Ubisoft says there will be nearly a dozen weapons such as daggers, explosives and swords to use against enemies, as well as items like the grappling hook used to get to difficult-to-reach high places and all manner of roof-leaping acrobatics. The DS touchscreen will be used in a variety of ways as well, including using it to pick-pocket victims and interrogate informants in stylus-controlled mini-games.

The publisher has confirmed the game will be released sometime in February, although there's no firm date. Assassin's Creed on home consoles divided opinions when it came out, although Gameloft's mobile version was a more consistent experience. It's going to be interesting to see which way the DS one will go.
