It's that time again! Time for another entry into our long-running GAMES OF THE WEEK series.

If you're looking for the best 5 games which have hit the iPhone, iPad or Android stores this week then you've landed yourself at the exact right place at just the right time. Lucky, lucky you.

With this article, we skirt around the droves of subscription services (Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, GameClub, Hatch, and all of their friends) which have launched onto mobile platforms over the years. We also don't factor in things like Steam Link or Google Stadia which allow streaming to handheld devices - and would open up this list to almost every game under the sun.

What that means is that our list is a finely curated list of brilliant, fresh titles which you can download and play without subscribing to, or installing, any third-party initiative. Of course, there are some great games on those services, but, let's focus on the stuff that you can grab right now.

From story-driven psychological horrors to synth-powered tower defence games, we've got a wide variety of genres to dip into this week.

Oh, and remember, that if you're looking to check through some of our previous selections then you can always do that at our Games of The Week Hub, it's a great way to find games to fill out that empty storage space on your phone. Or, if you like your news in bitesize chunks, delivered straight to your palm then maybe follow us on our Twitter.

Anyway, without any further delay, click on the big, blue button below to find out more about our top five of the games which released on mobile over the last week.

HopBound

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Endless running, Platform
Find out more about HopBound
HopBound

Taking place two years after DERE EVIL EXE, HopBound follows the story for Mayumi, a recluse who has to complete a strange, twisted retro game in order to find peace following events in her past. Fans of pixel style platformers will feel at home here, although the game is definitely unsettling in design - as well evidenced by the trailer.

Find out more about bit Dungeon III
bit Dungeon III

Following its release earlier on in the year for Android phones, Bit Dungeon III, the latest installment in KintoGames' 2D action-adventure series, has released onto iOS devices.

Whether you're familiar with the series or not, III is as good a place as any to dive in - and if you've been waiting around for a game which properly channels the tough, exploration driven combat of the classic adventure genre, then you definitely should dive in.

Words for a bird

Publisher: Bontegames
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Puzzle, Word game
Find out more about Words for a Bird
Words for a Bird

Here at Pocket Gamer we really like Bart Bonte's succinct puzzlers, his colour series (Green, Yellow, Blue) have captivated us and thankfully he's released another game in that style - although this time it is about finding words for a bird. You do that by interpreting messages based on the arrangement of letters. For example, if there's a P inside a G then then answer might be P-IN-G.

It's short, but very smart and satisfying. You can also pay to remove ads, getting infinite hints, if you wish.

100% Golf

Available on: iOS
Genre: Sports
Find out more about 100% Golf
100% Golf

If you manage to find all of the 100 tiny pieces of golf then you end up with 100% Golf and can strike down the dark lo--. 100% Golf is a pure, simple golfing game, but the big twist is that you use power-percentiles to golf. It's a clever twist on the normal golf style, essentially turning swing power into a limited resource.

It's also pretty easy going, and relaxing, perfect if you've had a stressful couple of days - even if you are not the stick-swinging, ball-hitting kinda person.

No trailer for this one I'm afraid, but you can find out more over on 100% Golf's AppStore page.

OverclockeTD

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Tower defence
Find out more about OverclockeTD
OverclockeTD

OverclockeTD is a fun little indie tower defence game that does something pretty cool with its Synthwave soundtrack, it matches the gameplay to the soundtrack's BPM. While it is, in many ways, a relatively standard TD, with your various turrets upgradeable, and placement and careful resource management essential, it is really how the game pairs to the music that shines through.

If you're not quite done with Tower Defence games then it's well worth grabbing OverclockeTD (it's free!) and cranking the music up for a few rounds.

Also no trailer for this one, goodness, but head over to the AppStore to download OverclockeTD.
