US start-up Gendai Games has launched a closed alpha test of its GameSalad game development platform for Mac, Facebook and iPhone.

The tool has been designed to be as simple to use as possible, with a drag 'n' drop interface that promises the ability to make games without any previous programming knowledge.

Running on Macs, it lets users personalise their games with photos from the iPhoto application, and music from GarageBand.

Created games can then be shared online, embedded on blogs or Facebook social networking profiles – with other sites like MySpace also supported.

And then there's the iPhone. GameSalad allows users to make their games run on Apple's handset, complete with support for multi-touch, accelerometer and its hardware-accelerated graphics.

Mashable has more information, saying that GameSalad will initially support 2D games only, but that 3D will be added later. You can apply for the closed alpha test here.

It's an intriguing project for sure, especially the way it capitalises on the twin buzz around Facebook and iPhone games.

How GameSalad ties in with the App Store submission process is one element that needs more explanation, but if the platform delivers on its promise, the results could be fascinating.
