Our initial reaction to seeing that the fantastic Midnight Pool went live on the N-Gage portal over the weekend was, "Eight quid! For a game that's already three years old! You must be joking!" On closer inspection however, it seems we might have jumped the gun.

Despite having the exact same name as the classic original (which incidentally still enjoys regular visits to O2's top ten list in the O2 Mobile Charts) the N-Gage version is clearly the showroom build of Midnight Pool, with flashy crisp 3D visuals and a welcome landscape screen mode.

Indeed, it looks like the 3D version of the original has been buffed to a fine sheen for N-Gage. Judging by the screens of the new version as opposed to those we saw two years ago, the game has scrubbed up very well indeed.

Still, £8 for what is essentially just a 3D update isn't the easiest sell in the world, especially seeing as the humble 2D version that will work on any N-Gage capable phone as a Java game only costs £2.50. But then, there is the N-Gage Arena rankings to think of, not to mention the fact that the controls on an N-Gage capable phones tend to be dreamy in comparison to the majority of other handsets.

The game is available now and for reasons of posterity, we will be conducting a review before very long; click 'Track It!' to be sure not to miss it.
