No sooner has the excellent DS fighting game Bleach: Blade of Fate finally got a release outside of Japan that Sega goes and confirms a sequel, Bleach: Dark Souls.

Dark Souls promises a new and exclusive storyline, expanded cast of characters – 44 in total – and multi-plane fighting (as in you can move back and forth from background to foreground) for up to four players over wi-fi.

The story follows a 15-year-old boy, Ichigo Kurosaki, who is turned into a Soul Reaper against his will, and things take place between series 1 and 2 of the anime the game is based on.

As previously, the game offers a comprehensive selection of modes to play – seven in total, including Story, Arcade and Challenge modes – and a range of special attacks to master. Combos and Super Power Attacks in the game are taken directly from the TV series.

Wi-fi action will utilise DS Download Play so two players can go head-to-head with only one copy of the game. There are also four people bouts to engage in, too.

What else? Oh, 30 new Power-Up Cards and Power Crystals are thrown in and so is an all-new Bleach encyclopaedia containing fascinating facts about the universe. Well, fascinating for Bleach fans, at least. The rest of us will probably just stick with enjoying the fighting. Which, if it's anything like Blade of Fate's will be well worth getting into.

At the moment only a summer release date for the US has been reported, but we're hoping the UK will see the game soon afterwards.
