A Game of the Year in 2012 - especially in the strategy genre - XCOM: Enemy Unknown is heading to iOS.

That's the news from publisher 2K and developer Firaxis.

Indeed, their take is that the PC/console game, itself a reworking of the 1994 classic, is coming over to iOS as the "full experience".

Gameplay-wise that means you'll be stepping up as the commander of an elite military organisation, building your expertise, base and resources in terms of research, engineering and finance, while directing your squad of four to six troops in 3D isometric turn-based combat.

Extra-extraterrestrial combat units?

In terms of any extras or specific details about the iOS release - such as will multiplayer be included or what's the pricing model? - 2K is yet to comment.

Still, with a release date labelled as "summer", it has plenty of time to let us know what's what.

You can see what all the fuss is about in the following video.
