RIM announces support for OpenGL ES and new services

BlackBerry to get 3D games and in-app payments

BlackBerry gaming just got a whole lot more interesting, thanks to a series of announcements by Research In Motion at its BlackBerry Developer Conference.

The big news: support for OpenGL ES - the same tech that enables all those console-tastic 3D games on iPhone. The first BlackBerry to support it is the new Storm 2.

EA Mobile took the stage at the conference this morning to show a demo of its Need For Speed: Shift running on the Storm 2, which looked suitably whizzy, using the device's accelerometer for controls.

Also big for games developers is RIM's launch of in-app payments. Although they won't launch until next year, they'll allow games firms to do the same kind of extra content purchases and/or subscriptions that they're starting to do on iPhone - think ngmoco's Eliminate Pro or Com2uS's HomeRun Battle 3D.
