How Blackberry online activity outguns iPhone in 12 of the top 15 US cities

When it comes to research on the US smartphone market, the focus always seems to be about the dominance of iPhone.

Digging deeper into the numbers however, and what's clear is that the dominant manufacturer of smartphones in the US is actually Canadian outfit RIM.

One nice illustration comes from Millennial Media. The mobile advertiser reckons its reach - at almost 60 million mobile internet users - consist of 83 percent of the US market.

And breaking down the most populous areas in terms of mobile advertising activity, the BlackBerry vs iPhone situation put in focus.

In the top 15 Designated Market Areas, BlackBerry is the number 1 device in 12, with iPhone limited to Apple's Californian heartlands such as Sacramento, San Francisco, and Fresno.

Where Apple does gain additional market share is that the iPod touch is the top connected media device in all 15, and it's the combination of iPhone and iPod touch that provides Apple with its overall top status.
