The mobile industry needs to move beyond using download rates as the sole measure of success, focusing instead on better ways of delivering value to loyal players.

That's the take of Halbrick's CMO Phil Larsen, who – while speaking to PocketGamer.biz as part of a studio profile – hinted that the fast changing nature of the mobile scene requires developers to evolve just as quickly.

Beyond downloads

"Over the next few years we will really see mobile platforms evolve as place where people spend even more of their time, and this helps investment in games as a service," said Larsen, speaking as part of our Halfbrick studio profile.

"Looking at success in terms of download numbers is outdated - of course it's one measure of success and naturally I'll always want more!

"But figuring out where to create value for a smaller audience, and incentivise innovation even more, will be a very fun challenge."

Larsen concluded by predicting that the "amazing evolution" of the mobile space will result in games being seen as "vibrant ecosystems, where players can find more than just high scores and social sharing."
