Fighting Fantasy: Blood of the Zombies
Tin Man Games brought the gamebook series bang up to date with this release. Not only was it a new adventure, written by one of the creators of the legendary Fighting Fantasy games, it also brought dice rolling to the fore.
Unlike other games in the series, which also have awesome dice rolls, this one sees you tossing a cube for every zombie you're facing. That means more dice, more tension, and more cheering when those bones roll in your favour.
Roll For It!
This one's all about the dice. You've got some cards on the table, and you need to roll dice and match the symbols on the cards to score points. It's a really interesting system, and sometimes you'll see a card snagged by another player before you get a chance to roll again.
There's loads of different dice sets that you can buy and unlock, and the game manages to capture the quick-fire, roll and pass gameplay of the original really really well. It might not be super deep, but it's still super fun.
Bottom of the 9th
In Bottom of the 9th, the dice you're rolling often take the place of the ball that you're hitting. It helps add not just to the gameplay but to the overall aesthetic of the experience as well. You know you're playing a board game, and you know it's about baseball.
The dice rolls here are not only satisfying, they're designed to keep you locked into the theme of the game. And that's a really clever way to make sure that the rolls in a digital game are still integral.
Elder Sign: Omens
Interestingly, Elder Sign: Omens is included on this list because it shows how games where dice are incredibly important in the physical iteration, can be changed to better reflect the hardware they're being played on.
So where there are dice in the original game, here they're replaced with tiles. It still makes for interesting and tactile gameplay, but it also means the game feels different to the physical version. If you're a fan of Elder Sign: Omens in the real world, then this digital version has more than a few surprises for you.
