Japanese Super Mario 3D Land cartridge features unexpected Nintendo 3DS firmware update

Nintendo's Super Mario 3D Land game cartridge - which hit Japanese shelves today - not only features a fat plumber, green pipes, and goombas, but also a 3DS firmware update.

This software update delivers several new social improvements, starting with the ability to join a buddy's game from your 3DS's friend list. The upgrade also makes it easier to sift through your mates, with online pals pushed to the front of the queue.

This unexpected update contains none of the goodies pencilled in for Nintendo's recently announced November 3DS firmware upgrade, which include 3D video recording, eShop changes, and new StreetPass content.

We presume that refresh is still to come.

Super Mario 3D Land will jump onto European shores on November 18th. Don't forget to check out our hands-on while you wait.
