Social mobile publisher Z2Live has acquired Vancouver-based outfit Big Sandwich Games for an undisclosed amount.

The purchase will result in nine employees joining the Z2Live team, with Big Sandwich – which has developed titles across iOS, PC, Mac, Wii and Xbox 360 – set to rebranded as Z2Live Games Vancouver.

"Big Sandwich Games clearly executes at a level that meets our bar for quality," Z2 Live COO Lou Fasulo told VentureBeat.

"The acquisition represents a key part of our long term strategy to build, operate and scale genre-defining games."

Z2Live initially began life as a multiplayer platform for iOS in 2009, backed by $3 million in funding.

However, the company switched focus to social games development and distribution after Apple rolled out Game Center, scoring a further undisclosed injection of funds in March 2011 to fuel its new direction.

The company now boasts more than 25 million users, with its employee roster topping 80 – up from 16 at the same point a year previous.

Its top grossing releases on iOS include Trade Nations, Battle Nations and MetalStorm: Wingman.
