Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? 2nd Edition

Essentially, there are no surprises. You get exactly what you expect here, so it's the whole Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? game playing quite happily on your mobile. There's no mumbling Chris Tarrant to deal with, but you do get the music (in a tinny, mobile-music kind of way), a series of increasingly harder questions and three lifelines. If you've ever watched the show and thought, 'I could do better than that', then now is your chance to prove it.

The questions are intelligent and very much in the style of the show. So, for example, the first couple of questions will be something like: 'Which of these is a popular card game? Gin Rummy Vodka rummy, Wine rummy or Beer rummy'.

Then, as you get closer to the magic million, the questions obviously get harder as you go. For example, one for the £125,000 prize is: 'The chough is a member of which bird family? Thrush, Finch, Crow, or Gull'.

Again, the lifelines work in exactly the same way as the ones in the actual show, but with some obvious compromises. So, 50:50 removes two wrong answers, leaving the right one and another wrong one; Ask The Audience gives the virtual spectators the opportunity to vote on what they think is the correct answer – and, thankfully, there's always one answer that's voted for considerably more than the rest.

Finally, phone a friend sadly doesn't allow you to pause the game and actually phone someone, but it does give a worthy simulation and, more often than not, an option for the correct answer.

Another neat touch that adds to the realism is the inclusion of a Fastest Finger round at the start of the game. As in the TV show, you're asked to put four things in order. The quicker you're able to do it, the more bonus points you'll receive. At the end of the game your final score is added to the high score table (if it's good enough, obviously) and you're also able to add it to the online 'master league'.

There's no doubting that this is as good a mobile version of the TV show as you could hope to get. With the odd exception, the questions all fit in perfectly with their relevant prizes and there appears to be enough of them in the game's database to avoid too much repetition. Clearly though, when the excitement of potentially winning a massive sum of money is removed, and with it a lot of the appeal of the game.

Having said that, although this mobile version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? won't earn you a fortune, it is playable enough to make it worth a game or two on a dull train journey. And that, as they say, is our final answer.
