In-app infrastructure specialist Urban Airship has picked up $5.4 million in a Series B funding round, the company has revealed.

Bringing its total venture capital investment to $6.5 million, the latest round was led by Foundry Group, with previous investors True Ventures and Founders Co-op also involved.

The company, which serves up engines for in-app purchases, push notifications and so forth on iPhone, Android and BlackBerry, has gained a new director as part of the round, with Foundry Group MD Jason Mendalson joining the board following his firm's investment.

Rising high

"Urban Airship really impressed us with its foresight into the mobile market," said Mendalson.

"The team there knows the market better than anyone else and is consistently out in front of what customers want and need.

"Urban Airship's early traction of securing more than 4,000 customers sending millions of messages every day and reaching 45 million devices is extremely impressive."

The firm currently has the likes of Warner Bros. and Newsweek on its books, with the latest round of funding set to be used to aid its expansion in the coming years.

It also enabled Tapulous to get its Tap Tap Revenge 2 hooked up to in-app purchases when iOS 3.0 launched.

Indeed, Oregon Live claims securing larger offices is the company's first target, with Urban Airship's workforce predicted to expand to 50 by the end of 2011.
