Creative Assembly announces Unity-powered Total War Battles for mobile

It's been an interesting day in terms of core games coming to mobile.

Online strategy outfit Aeria Games has announced it's coming to mobile, as has Facebook publisher Kabam.

Now from the console side of the business, Sega-owned UK developer Creative Assembly has revealed it's been working for 12 months to bring its signature strategy franchise Total War to mobile.

It's created what it labels the Total War Digital team to develop the mobile series, which will be called Total War Battles; something brand director Rob Bartholomew labels "a distinct new direction."

It's being developed with the Unity engine to ensure cross platform support.

A new way to war

"This isn't the traditional Total War you might expect. We are working on a title that is specifically tailored to the play styles and control methods of mobile platforms," explained lead designer, Renaud Charpentier.

"We want to deliver a game that plays to the strengths of handheld RTS mechanics, and perfectly adapts to a host of different platforms. We're developing in Unity to help us achieve stunning visuals, gameplay and audio on all our target devices."

Specific platforms and details about the first game in the Total War Battles series will be announced in the very near future.

Unity only supports iOS and Android out-of-the-box, however.
