Mobile MMORPG TibiaME first launched back in 2003, and since then its only means of monetisation has been subscriptions.

But that's now changed, with German developer CipSoft introducing microtransactions, allowing players to pick and choose which subscription benefits they want to purchase on a more flexible basis.

While subscribers essentially rent a suite of benefits such as increased stamina and additional friendlist slots, in-app purchases allow players to buy these benefits on a permanent basis, using the new platinum in-game currency.

MMO with benefits

"The subscription combined all benefits in one package. However, most of our players didn’t really need all benefits, but still had to pay for them," explained CipSoft's lead product manager Benjamin Zuckerer.

"So we decided to split this collection up and to offer these benefits individually. By doing this, we could both lower the prices and offer more fitting products."

While subscriptions are still available, the phrasing of CipSoft's comments suggests a move away from the model, as the venerable mobile MMO adopts the increasingly widespread freemium approach.
