Stupid Zombies 3 is a neat-looking cartoon physics-blaster that sees you slaughtering your way through hordes of the colour-coded undead.

It takes its cues from Angry Birds, but it's a little more dynamic than the early versions of Rovio's bird-flinging masterwork, and sees you scrambling across levels, chopping down the undead as you go.

There are some slightly mean difficulty spikes here though, and the gameplay gets a little one-note after a while. It's fun, but it's not as much fun as it could be.

Shoot and move

You play as a survivor of the zombie apocalypse armed with a weapon. Each level you need to kill a set number of colour-coded zombies. Kill enough and you move on to the next challenge.

After each shot you'll scuttle through the level to a new vantage point. Any zombies that are left behind can't be taken out, and with a finite number to murder on each level that can leave you in hot water.

The more zombies of the same hue you kill with a single shot, the more points you'll earn. Chaining together multiple hits is the only way to finish some of the later levels.

There are explosive barrels that you need to tag as well, creating chain reactions that kill vast swathes of the undead. Other levels see you having to pick up hamburgers along the way. Shoot them and they disappear.

Sometimes you'll play different characters and have to get to grips with different weapons like RPGs and rocket launchers. Most of the time you're just blasting out pinging shotgun shells and hoping the ricochets go kindly for you.

Flesh creeping horrors

But after a while the pace slows up a little and you're left with a bit of a slog. There's an energy system, and you can pay with gold bars to add extra shots if you run out of bullets. And you will run out of bullets.

And it makes everything feel stickier than it should. You want to be blasting through with a grin on your face, but too quickly it turns into a grimace. There are some good ideas here, but they slip through your grasp a little too quickly.

Stupid Zombies 3 - Following the herd

What starts off as a likeable and good looking physics puzzlers ends up a little disappointing
