Simon Oliver almost seems like an industry name already, despite Rolando being on of his first truly commercial game. A demo of his ball rolling iPhone game received a hearty reaction from the YouTube audience, capturing the attention of iPhone-centric publisher ngmoco.

It turned out to be Pocket Gamer’s first ever Platinum Award winning iPhone game, and it’s just been announced that Rolando has now crossed the 700,000 downloads mark.

“The amount of interest it generated was incredible and certainly indicated it had a lot of potential. It wasn't until the end of the process that I could really get a solid idea of how it was going to turn out and started to get really excited,” Oliver told PocketGamer.Biz in an interview.

“Even still, right up until launch I was a bag of nerves. I'd never released a game before and had some paranoid fear that the internet was gonna turn on me!”

Although Rolando is still selling well on the App Store (having received a shot in the arm from a recent price drop), a sequel is already underway, and after this kind of success, it’s easy to see why.

Spanner Spencer
Spanner Spencer
Yes. Spanner's his real name, and he's already heard that joke you just thought of. Although Spanner's not very good, he's quite fast, and that seems to be enough to keep him in a regular supply of free games and away from the depressing world of real work.
