On the back of what proved to be a record quarter for DeNA, one of its star performers – Mobage card battler Rage of Bahamut – has passed 3 million downloads outside of Japan.

That's according to the developer behind the title, Cygames, which claims said total has been reached within the game's first six months.

Big on Bahamut

That means Rage of Bahamut is currently averaging around 500,000 downloads a month outside of Japan.

It's an impressive if not spectacular rate, but one DeNA will claim justifies the company's decision to lead with Asian-sourced games in the west.

Rival GREE has, instead, looked to secure more backing from outsides based in US and Europe, also founding development houses in San Francisco, Vancouver, and – most recently – London.

Cygames notes Rage of Bahamut moved to the top of Google Play's Top Grossing Chart back in April, holding that position for a further 16 weeks consecutively.

The news comes as PocketGamer.biz editor Jon Jordan declared card battlers as a whole as an "evolutionary cul-de-sac" in his most recent opinion piece for the site.
