UPDATE: Quantum Legacy has just been updated, not released: it's been available on the App Store since February. This update introduced - among other things - a new mission, new shields and weapons, and support for the new iPad's Retina display. Thanks, 'lumothesinner'. Original story follows:

We've just heard that completely free 3D space shooter Quantum Legacy, which was created by a three-man indie development team, has blasted onto the App Store for iPhone and iPad.

Quantum Legacy sees you jump into the cockpit of an upgradable spacecraft, and battle it out with dangerous opponents throughout the darkest reaches of space.

You control your craft by tilting your device from side to side and tapping the red reticule that appears on your device's screen to quickly warp to specific areas of the battlefield. On-screen buttons allow you to utilise a protective shield and fire missiles at your foes.

Once (or should we say if) you manage to survive one of the game's bloody battles, you can upgrade your ship to unlock new shields and missiles.

You can download this completely free shooter (there are no ads, and only a single 69p / 99c IAP that allows you to support the game's developer) from the App Store as a Universal app.
