Puzzle & Dragons Z for the 3DS will feature a full RPG plot, plenty of match-three gameplay

Puzzle & Dragons is, by the most conservative estimation, one of the most successful games in the world at the moment - mobile or otherwise.

And yet, it achieved this stratospheric popularity without providing players with anything resembling to a plot.

The game starts when you're tossed in a dungeon, you get a explanation of how to play, and then you're sent on your way.

It's all good fun - but GungHo reckons that if Puzzle & Dragons wants to keep the attention of 3DS gamers, it'll need a story to go along with its gameplay.

That's where Puzzle & Dragons Z comes in.

Siliconera reports that while Puzzle & Dragons Z will use the same battle system as the massively successful mobile version, it will also be expanded into a full-on RPG.

Players will assume the role of a Dragon Tamer who sets out with some friendly dragons to stop the Paradox Organisation - an evil group that's out to ruin the peace and balance in the world for a reason that will (hopefully) be made clear later in the game.

It all looks very Pokemon-esque from the outset, so it might have some steep competition from Pokemon X and Y when it launches on the 3DS in Japan this winter.

Although there's no release date or window provided, GungHo has stated that it plans to release Puzzle & Dragons Z for the 3DS in North America.
