Adorable monsters have become a mobile game staple, but you generally don't have to eat them. Paper Munchers puts a funny if morbid twist on the puzzle genre, managing in the process to be both charming and irreverent.
Set in a two-dimensional pulp word, Paper Munchers is about gobbling up all the little on-screen critters. They don’t move, so you have to drop bombs with your finger to push them into the hungry mouths located around the level. Eating all of them opens up the next of a total of 75 stages.
You only get a handful of bombs, which means each drop has to be well-placed. You can buy more bombs using the in-game currency, which is earned by completing missions. However, if you’re impatient, you can buy more bombs with real-life cash.
The advanced technique comes into play with colour-matching. Pushing a monster into a mouth of the same colour gives you about ten times the points, so getting the right monster into the right jowl is the only way to make the top scores.
Expect to catch yourself playing the same maddening level over and over again to get just one more red monster into the right mouth.
Paper Munchers’s addictiveness not only comes from the gameplay, but from the brilliant aesthetic details. Toss a monster into a mouth and it'll burp and spit out the paper bones. Royally screw up a level and the game will laugh at you.
The outsized personality and simple yet deep mechanics make Paper Munchers one of the more charming puzzle games out right now.
