Mobile and social games publisher Outplay Entertainment has secured $4 million in its latest funding round from existing investors Pentech Ventures and the Scottish Investment Bank.

The sum will be used to expand Outplay's Dundee studio, and to fund the development of new products – including location-based and augmented reality games.

Some funds will also be set aside for the marketing of Outplay's new and existing games, too.

In a bubble

"This investment is testament to the fantastic progress the Outplay team has made developing and launching our first games, as well as the confidence Pentech and SIB have in our plans for the future and in our new game, Bubble Blaze," explained Outplay co-founder and CEO Douglas Hare.

"This new round ensures that we'll be able to give it, as well as the other titles we have in the development pipeline, the support it needs to succeed in this highly competitive, global marketplace."

Outplay president and co-founder Richard Hare also commented on the funding round, explaining how he felt Outplay's continued success and expansion had vindicated the decision to set up in Dundee.

Scottish gaming

"Doug and I built our last companies in California but the talent of the engineers, designers, artists, and producers available in the area has validated our decision to move back to the UK and build the studio in Dundee."

"We have a hugely creative staff, developing a new range of genre defining games, and I look forward to expanding the team further," Richard Hare concluded.

To date, Outplay has launched four free-to-play games, which are available for various platforms including Android, iOS and Facebook.
