Surface is an unbelievably great product, reckons Bill Gates

What with Apple, Google and Microsoft announcing and/or launching new hardware over the next seven days, it's going to be a busy week for techheads.

Yet, of that competitive trio, it would be hard to argue against the opinion that Microsoft will be the most watched.

Windows 8 is clearly a big deal in the OS space, while Friday will see the launch of its Surface tablet and Monday 29th October, the official reveal of Windows Phone 8.

So what does Bill Gates think about it all?

Thrown a couple of softballs by official Microsoft channels, the company's non-executive chairman was keen to point out the wider implications of the approach.

"This is a big milestone in terms of all Microsoft products in terms of connecting to cloud services, Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and the new version of Office," Gates said.

"People will be pretty amazed about the energy Microsoft's putting behind these new wave of products."

Touching the Surface

Of course, as a new piece of hardware, Surface will likely get the main focus.

Bill's already got his; only a black touch cover though.

"Surface is an unbelievably great product," he commented, also praising the "beauty of the device" and the action of the hinge.

Yet, his conclusion about the Surface concept highlighted a somewhat old fashioned approach; "Can you get an even better tablet that also has what you expect in a PC?" he questioned.

We'll find out on Friday.
