Going global: Two thirds of Google Play revenue is from outside of the US
|

Google has stressed the importance of developers launching their games outside of America, with the giant revealing that a large chunk of Google Play revenue is now generated overseas.

Speaking at Pocket Gamer's recent Mobile Mixer in San Francisco, Google Play business development lead Koh Kim was keen to highlight the global opportunities Google's marketplace serves up for studios.

Player passport

"More than two-thirds of Google Play revenue is from outside of the US," detailed Kim, going on to state that "Android has 1 billion activated devices with 1.5 million activated each day, available in more than 190 countries and 300 carriers."

Indeed, as app stores in the west continue to expand, so the level of competition for consumer attention is also on the rise.

As a result, developers are increasingly looking to Asia to build their userbases.

That'll be the main topic on the agenda of Pocket Gamer's first conference this January in London – Pocket Gamer Connects – where western developers looking east and eastern developers looking west will have the chance to share their knowledge and experience.

Global local

For Google's part, Kim claimed that the company is eager for developers in its ecosystem to find success outside their home territory.

"Google thinks global scale," added Kim, "but content has to be locally relevant, so the Google Play Developer Console localisation toolbox includes an App Translation Service as well as other services to help you distribute your apps around the world."

Kim's comments formed some of highlights from Pocket Gamer's latest San Francisco Mobile Mixer, where attendeeds picked up pro tips on how to launch their games amongst cocktails, award winning bites by the GrilledCheezGuy and sultry beats by PlayStation's DJ R3Y.

Also on the panel were – Konami's John Coligan, Namco Bandai's Tony Colafrancesco, Applifier's Mickey Maher, and PapayaMobile's Fernando Pizarro.

Sponsored by Everyplay and PapayaMobile – and also produced by Pocket Gamer's Martine Paris, and staffed by a volunteer squad of gaming professionals – the mixer was the latest in a long line of Pocket Gamer events in San Francisco.
