Android's US smartphone share passes 60 percent as iOS and BlackBerry fall back
Google's OS also becomes top revenue driver
Anyone who has kept tabs on Millennial Media's monthly sweeps of the US smartphone market will be well aware of Android's dominant position at the top.
Even with this in mind, however, July appears to have been a watershed moment for Google's OS.
As well as expanding its share in the region beyond 60 percent – up 7 percentage points in the last month, and 42 points year on year – the platform is also now the most lucrative OS for developers, accounting for 48 percent of all app revenue.
Apple slips backAndroid's assent, as you might expect, comes at the expense of its main rivals.
Overall, smartphone sales continue to grow – its share of the overall mobile mix up 5 percent month on month – but iOS managed to fall back 5 percentage points to a 21 percent share across the same period.
BlackBerry, too, is down 1 percentage point, settling on a 14 percent share of the smartphone market.
It's the eighth consecutive month Android has sat atop Millennial's rankings, despite Apple's iPhone remaining the most popular device on the market, with a 13.6 percent share.
Developer driverMore interesting from a developer's perspective, however, is Millennial's assessment that Android is now the greatest app revenue driver across the US.
Apple has been pushed into second spot, falling from a 49 percent share in June to its current 43 percent share.
Aside from the battle between the various operating systems, Millennial also reports game revenue continues to expands.
"While gaming application have been the number one application category on our network for over a year, they continue to grow, representing 29 percent of the application impressions in July – a 35 percent increase month-over-month," the report reads.
