How does one build an island with sea levels rising as they are?

That's the quirky, faintly nonsensical question that establishes both the tone and premise of In Churning Seas.

It's a tower builder, essentially, that has you plopping down chunks of ice to build up a landmass while around you the sea steadily rises. Double tap five of those rocks to set a solid foundation.

At first it all seems like a bit of a gimmick - a quirky, whimsical gimmick - as you bid to match the heights of real land formations.

As you pass these milestones, new shapes are added to your random boulder mix. These greatly improve your chances of success in subsequent attempts.

It's at around the point of your first or second milestone that something clicks and In Churning Seas goes from pretty bauble to mildly strategic highscore chaser. Taken with its beguilingly gentle, offbeat tone, it's a game that can sap a surprising amount of your time.
