Imangi Studios has announced that Temple Run 2 was downloaded more than 20 million times in its first four days on the App Store.

It took the game just eight hours to reach number one in the US App Store's top free apps chart, and after just one day on sale, the game had generated more than 6 million downloads.

Brand extension

"The response from fans has been overwhelming. We are thrilled players want more of the Temple Run universe, and we hope to grow and expand the game over the coming months," explained Imangi co-founder Keith Shepherd in a statement.

The studio is looking to expand Temple Run's brand presence too, and to that end, Imangi has made several licensing partnerships in recent months.

Perhaps the best known of these was the developer's partnership with Disney to produce Temple Run: Brave, but other arrangements have produced licensed apparel, digital comics, arcade machines and card/board games, as well as a range of branded sleepwear.

Starting over

Since its launch in August 2011, the original Temple Run has been downloaded more than 170 million times from the App Store, Google Play and Amazon Appstore.

Nonetheless, when Imangi began work on Temple Run 2 the team decided to start completely from scratch.

In an interview with PocketGamer.biz,, Keith Shepherd explains how the studio "rewrote the entire game" and "ditched" its 3D engine in an effort to improve on the original.
