In-app purchases enable developers to create new business models.

Some studios now trying out a more direct pay-for-play model compared to the traditional pay-for-faster-gameplay model used by freemium games such as FarmVille and We Rule.

One such is Imangi Studios, which is experimenting with a neat rewind option in the latest update of Harbor Master HD.

As the name suggests, rewind enables you to rewind the action when you crash your boats - i.e. it acts an old school arcade Continue.

You can only use one rewind per game, with players getting five free rewinds with the update, plus one rewind for each 1,000 pieces of cargo landed.

In addition, you can pay 99c for five rewinds, $2.99 for 20, $4.99 for 40.

A similar example is used by Jon Hare's Tower Studios, which launched its Free For Freaks arcade payment system in its Shoot To Kill iPhone game.
