Top 5 best RPGS of 2019 for iPhone and iPad (iOS)

On a bit of a role

Of all the game genres out there, the RPG has become the trickiest to define. And probably the most subjective.

A literal reading of the 'role playing game' would include pretty much every game ever released. What else are we doing in a first person shooter but taking on the role of a gun-toting maniac? Or an omniscient general in a turn-based strategy game?

Even if you drill down into the tropes that we've come to expect of an RPG, things can get murky. After all, how many mobile games these days feature experience points, character progression systems, grindy mechanics, and/or fantasy worlds? Are they all RPGs?

No, they're not. But the point is, we reckon the RPG term has gotten a whole lot looser as genres have cross-pollinated.

Which is why the following list of the best iOS RPGS of 2019 (so far) looks like it does, with roguelikes, strategy games and casual grinders all mixed in.

Take all your objections and grumbles to the comments section. We'll probably agree with you.

Skylanders: Ring of Heroes

Publisher: Com2uS
Available on: iOS + Android

Skylanders: Ring of Heroes

Here's a game that perfectly illustrates the RPG definition problem. Your old school RPG fan would turn their nose up at the casual, kiddy mechanics of Skylanders: Ring of Heroes. But it's undoubtedly a midcore RPG, with turn-based battles, fantasy beasties and lots of levelling up. It's also one of the most polished examples of such that we've seen.

2
AxE: Alliance vs Empire

Publisher: Nexon
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: RPG
Find out more about Alliance vs Empire
Alliance vs Empire

Alliance vs Empire is a casual MMO that virtually plays itself. Which might sound like a criticism (it is, but only a bit), but you just try putting the blasted thing down. Yes, it's essentially a clicker in a mage hat and furry barbarian pants. But its constant string of fetch quests and frictionless battles flows by so fluidly, it's tough to break away from its spell.

3
Forged Fantasy

Publisher: Hothead Games
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, Adventure, RPG

Forged Fantasy

Another midcore RPG experience, this time with a whole heap of AAA hack and slash action at its heart. Build a team of magical warriors, tanks, damage dealers and healers, then watch as they smash everything in sight. Add in a bunch of guild raids, co-op raids, solo raids, PvP, special challenges, and events, and you're onto a winner.

4
Langrisser Mobile

Publisher: Zlongame
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: RPG
Find out more about Langrisser Mobile
Langrisser Mobile

Langrisser Mobile is a strategy JRPG that boasts beautiful visuals and a whole heap of sweet content. Think Fire Emblem Heroes, but with more meat. You'll have to contend with some annoying free to play stuff, but there aren't many more entertaining tactical adventures on mobile. It's a startlingly complete package.

5
Immortal Rogue

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action
Find out more about Immortal Rogue
Immortal Rogue

Immortal Rogue is an action-heavy roguelike that can be played one handed. We can sense the RPG police scowling already, but it's the way Immortal Rogue's clever character progression system whirs away in the background that earns its place on this list. That and the fact that this is simply one of the best and toughest hack-and-slashers of the year so far.
