Dungeon Gems, Gameloft's mash-up of puzzler, RPG, and card-battler, is out right now for nothing on iPhone and iPad
But is it a gem?
Gameloft has released its gem-matching dungeon-following monster battler Dungeon Gems.
It's a free-to-play fantasy adventure that sees you trying to beat the scales off of some angry dragons.
You've got a grid of shapes to match into chains. Some of them damage your foes, some of them heal your dragon-battered hide. It's not exactly the most original collection of ideas.
There's a bit of card-battling RPG thrown in as well. You unlock new supporting characters as you play, and they have different skills and attack elements that you can include in your party.
The game looks gorgeous, with neat 3D graphics, lovely artwork, and some nice swooshy flashy special effects when things explode or get punched.
It's firmly in the free-to-play camp though. There's a lot of tutorials that walk you through confusing things that you'll probably have to end up paying for.
And there's an energy system. Everyone loves energy systems, right? I can't imagine why every game doesn't have an energy system.
Coins and gems and lightning bolts and other confusing things are thrown at you from the word go. That bit's awful, but the actual monster whomping is pretty fun.
Dungeon Gems is out right now on the App Store and it won't cost you a thing to give it a go. It's worth a look, but if you're in the anti free-to-play camp you'll want to give it a miss.
