With a Walking Dead game in production, Next Games raises $6 million
Flying the flag for the Nordics
Helsinki-based start-up studio Next Games has raised $6 million in investments through a successful series A funding round.
Founded by a powerhouse of design veterans from the likes of Rovio, Supercell and Disney, it's somewhat unsurprising that one of the co-leaders for Next Games' was Jari Ovaskainen - an early investor in Supercell.
VC outfit Lowercase Capital has now joined Ovaskainen in investing in Next Games, marking its first venture in the mobile games space since it launched in 2010.
Next upAlthough the studio is relatively young, Next Games already has a pair of titles in production - one of which is a free-to-play take on AMC's powerful The Walking Dead zombie franchise.
Speaking on the funding, Next Games' CEO Teemu Huuhtanen saw it as an endorsement of the northern games scene.
"Our funding was made possible by the pioneering work by established Scandinavian game development studios. It is a testament to the talent in the Nordic region where many of the most successful games in recent years have been created," Huuhtanen noted.
"The majority of our private investment is rooted in the United States and Asia, the world's leading mobile app markets.
"I'm confident this diversity will lead to compelling games with broad global appeal and unique opportunities for partnerships, such as the one we currently have with AMC."
