Cartoon Survivor is a tilty auto-runner that takes some of its cues from Crossy Road. It's not as compulsive, though, and it lacks the certain spark that would make it essential.
There's some fun to be had here, but the controls aren't always up to the task, and the bite-sized levels become a little repetitive after you've played through a few of them.Road to ruin?
You play a dodo who's sprinting down a track. It's a track littered with obstacles that want to slow you down, eat you, or hurt you in some other unpleasant ways.
Tilting your device moves you around the level, and tapping lets you jump. Hold down your finger while you're in the air and you'll glide for a while.
There are coins to collect, and each level has three semi-hidden trophies that are there to encourage completists to keep playing.
You're weaving around dinosaurs, dodging the attentions of cavemen, and trying not to step on the searing hot lava that'll ill you instantly.
Unfortunately, the tilty controls aren't quite there, and the angle of play often means you're not entirely sure you're going to miss a wall until you smash into it or skirt past.
The game demands quite a lot of precision from you, but doesn't give you the tools to properly achieve it. It looks good, and the free to play system it uses isn't particularly odious, but there's not quite enough here to really get the heart racing.Sole survivor?
Cartoon Survivor has some nice ideas scattered through it, and when they click together it can be a lot of fun.
But that just doesn't happen often enough to make it a must download, and in this era of hundreds of smartphone games hitting the App Store every week, that's just not good enough.
