Now here's something we haven't seen before - a game about shooting zombies.

Only joking. When we say that Call of Mini Zombies 2 is more of the same, we're not just talking about the fact that it's a sequel. We've trawled these arenas, mown down these shuffling hordes, and upgraded these automatic weapons before.

Of course, that fact would matter a lot less if the game were any good. Unfortunately, Call of Mini Zombies 2 is average at best.

Blood and Minigore

The game's art style and light-hearted arena-blasting premise is pure Minigore, with your square-headed protagonist tooling up and thinning out a crowd of zombies in each compact arena level.

Unlike Mountain Sheep's classic twin-stick shooter series, though, Call of Mini Zombies 2 adopts a control system that's closer to a first-person shooter. Here the second virtual stick is responsible for precision shooting - or at least precise enough for the too-generous auto-lock-on to kick in.

This poses a whole heap of problems. given that your character is physically present on screen. You end up with a severely restricted view of proceedings, with frequent instances of zombies shuffling up on you from behind.

What makes this especially problematic is that your main tactic - especially when taking on a boss - is to shoot while backpedalling. Exacerbating the problem further still is the fact that it takes an absolute age to spin your view around 360 degrees.

Dead inside

The gunplay itself is pretty unsatisfying. As mentioned, the auto-lock-on robs the game of a feeling of skill and accomplishment, and there's insufficient feedback for your shots hitting home (except for the occasional decapitation).

Call of Mini Zombies 2's missions are also dull and repetitive, involving repeatedly entering the same environments and shooting randomly spawning zombies, or accompanying AI characters as they escape or run for provisions - and shooting randomly spawning zombies.

Some fun can be had with the game's fairly meaty upgrade system, which lets you plough points and currency into your character and your weapons, but when the core fighting is so stolid it soon loses its appeal.

Call of Mini Zombies 2 is a zombie game alright. It loosely resembles any number of livelier, smarter games (like Zombiewood or Minigore 2: Zombies), but lacks the wits and the pace to truly compete one-on-one with such titles.

Call of Mini Zombies 2

A merely adequate approximation of any number of iOS arena blasters, Call of Mini Zombies 2 lacks that crucial vibrancy and flow needed in such an oversubscribed genre
