Block Fortress War is a game of ebb and flow. Its cuboid violence is all about the push and shove of the battlefield, as waves of grunts spawn from your base to clash with minions and heroes among resource-granting blocks and game-winning objectives.

You control a hero, tapping the screen to guide them through angular maps capturing nodes, tackling foes, and using blocky technology to fortify advanced positions that keep your opponent busy while you marshal your own troops.

Blocking tactics

Each of the battles that make up the pretty hefty single-player campaign sees you swarming across a chunk of a planet. First you send out your hero, and when the first bad guys appear you'll be backed up by waves of troops.

These troops can be given different equipment, but the more armour and weaponry you give them the longer they take to spawn, so you need to balance their offensive capabilities with how soon you need them to support you.

The levels have different victory conditions, and you'll need to gain control, and hold control, of resource blocks. Around these blocks you can use your cash and elements to build gun emplacements, power boosters, and farm units.

You win the battlefield bit by bit, adding tactical possibilities as you take over more of the nodes. Sometimes you'll find yourself dashing for victory. Other times you'll hack your way through, dodging back to base to heal back up before mounting another assault.

The cube route

As well as the multi-levelled campaign mode, there's a beefy multiplayer option that tweaks some of the balancing and sees you facing off in either 1v1 or 2v2 matches. The game opens up a lot more with other players involved, and being able to recapture resource points adds a more exciting rhythm to the play.

Things can get a little repetitive, and sometimes the later levels feel a little like a slog, but updating and upgrading your blocks, and playing as the different armies, adds variety when the game starts to lag.

Block Fortress War isn't perfect, but there's a bash-bash drive to its block capturing, building, and violence that means it's engaging more often than not.

Block Fortress War

It's a slightly jumbled affair, but there's enough fun in Block Fortress War's angular battles to keep you entertained
