SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom - Rehydrated, the remake of the 2003 action game, is heading for iOS and Android

Publisher HandyGames and developer Purple Lamp Studios have announced that SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated will be heading for iOS and Android. You can pre-order it on both platforms and the App Store states that the expected release date for the action-adventure game is January 21st.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is a port of the game that has previously released on pretty much everything else earlier this year. It's currently available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and even Google Stadia. The game itself is also a remake of the 2003 PS2, Xbox and GameCube title.

It follows the adventures of the titular sponge and his pals Patrick Star and Sandy Cheeks as they look to defeat Plankton's latest nefarious scheme to rule Bikini Bottom. He's deployed a series of kooky robot grunts alongside robo bosses that take their appearance from Bikini's Bottom's more recognisable residents.

Throughout your journey, you'll run into several characters from the TV show including the likes of Mrs Puff, The Flying Dutchman and everyone's favourite grump, Squidward. You can check out some gameplay from SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated in the embedded trailer below.

Compared to the 2003 version of the game, Rehydrated promises high-end visuals alongside a more polished gameplay experience to make everything feel more modern. It also features content that was cut from the initial release all those years ago including a boss fight against Robo Squidward.

SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated is available to pre-order now over on the App Store and Google Play ahead of its expected release on January 21st. It will be a premium title that will cost $8.99.
