The mobile games industry has long been known for all of the unique and different independent games that can be found around every corner within the various app stores. From the likes of Florence, to former Big Indie Pitch winners like What The Golf!?, we’ve seen many go from breakout hit to stardom. Nevertheless, with the potential next big thing hidden behind every corner, it can sometimes be somewhat hard to discover that next indie gem.

Well, this problem is exactly why we set up our regular international competition for indie developers, The Big Indie Pitch, around 8 years ago. From San Francisco to Hong Kong and everywhere in between, we currently run around 20 of these global events a year in order to showcase all the amazing new indie games in development. Of course, there are prizes and international recognition, but the reward is the chance to show all of you readers some of the latest games in development.

Understandably, 2020 has proven to be a challenging year for all in the industry. As such, we felt it was important to continue to highlight all of the indie talents in any way we can and took the Big Indie Pitch digital, with our first digital pitches taking place earlier this year during our Pocket Gamer Connects Digital #1 conference.

Much like with our previous digital pitches, the demand for our next digital pitches was as high as ever, with 13 of the most exciting developers battling it out for the crown. Nevertheless, three games rose to the top, with United Kingdom-based Hairy Heart Games’ Rallyallyally being crowned the winner.

Of course, Rallyallyally, as you already know, was the winner, but we always award prizes for the top three. So read on to not only find out more about Rallyallyally, but also our runners-up and honourable mention from The Big Indie Pitch at Pocket Gamer Connects Digital #4 (2020) sponsored by our season sponsors, Kwalee and G-Star, alongside event sponsors Plug-In Digital.

1st Place - RallyAllyAlly by Hairy Heart Games

Rallyallyally is a casual focused mobile racer with a very unique twist. You see, in this racer, at the start of each round, one player literally builds a track by driving around a trackless environment, and whilst this is happening, players must adapt to this living racecourse as they all jockey for position.

As such, in this last-man-standing racing game, slow and fast players are constantly eliminated until only the smartest and those with the quickest reflexes are left racing. To say it's a new twist on the racing genre is an understatement, and as such it's a game that had everyone at The Big Indie Pitch very excited for.

Much like any game like this, whilst players only start off with a sword and staff, the game features a range of ways to customize your battle experience, alongside intuitive controls that are accessible to newcomers and veterans of the genre alike. Dashero really is a casual action that can be enjoyed for long plays or small bursts depending on your preference.

Sharkania by Angry Cat Studios

In this turn-based strategy title, you command an army of Dragons as you look to take control of the board and overwhelm your enemy. The core gameplay itself is something akin to a mix of classic strategy titles Chess and Go, and focuses on outsmarting your opponent rather than overpowering them.

Additionally, the game is filled with a variety of cute and adorable dragonlings, helping, in turn, to make the game as accessible as possible. It’s also still in Early Access with a variety of updates and additions planned for both the gameplay and the wider player engagement.

Atomic Invaders from Below by Silver Stream Studio

Atomic Invaders from Below is a top-down shooter designed from the ground-up for mobile. Taking inspiration from sci-fi movies of the 1950s and distinctly embodying images of the like of The War of the Worlds, Silver Stream Studio hope to create a stylised, story-driven action-packed bullet-hell shooter.

Within the game itself players will take on the role of Col Mackenzie and a squad of her Longhorn Rangers as they do everything in their power to protect the secretive base from the Argutoid; a race of mutant insects capable of devouring all living matter in their path. Stages will take the form of short, yet fast and frantic action, combined with puzzle elements such as mazes to traverse and strategy focused battles. The final game is still some way off, but the prospects certainly are exciting for this title.

Attactic by Robox Agency

Attactic is a real-time strategy that takes place literally where you stand thanks to its integrated augmented reality presentation. In order to claim victory, you’ll have to choose your physical cards, prepare your invasion tactics and take down your opponent's tower.

Of course, this can be done both solo, or alternatively, you could invite a friend over and take them on in real-time. Finally, for those worrying about whether their space would accommodate this kind of experience, Robox Agency will also offer a non-AR experience so as to maximise accessibility.

Bad Guy / Good Guy by Salad Hunters

How easy is it to decide whether someone is good or bad? Well, that’s exactly the questions that Salad Hunter’s latest game poses as it challenges you to work with the gaming community in order to challenge pre-existing character descriptions and work out how you truly see someone when emotion is removed.

Would The Dark Knight’s actions truly be viewed as heroic without the mythos around him? Would world leaders truly be viewed as bad without politics? This is all for you to decide, before seeing how your thoughts lineup with everyone else’s.

Crazy Planet by In2uitions

In this planetary exploration title, players must traverse the furthest reaches of a rather chaotic planet, whilst battling against its many obstacles. Of course, these aren’t your usual obstacles, and instead, players will have to take on anything from houses, trees, and even meteors.

In order to survive, players will be able to use a range of weaponry, though they’ll have to be careful to avoid their firepower entering the planetary atmosphere and coming back to hit themselves. Finally, there will of course be a leaderboard system which will display how many points you earned on your quest to become the best survivor in the world.
