GAMES OF THE WEEK - The 5 best new mobile games for iOS and Android - September 3rd 2020
It's that time again! Time for another entry into our long-running GAMES OF THE WEEK series.
If you're looking for the best 5 games which have hit the iPhone, iPad or Android stores this week then you've landed yourself at the exact right place at just the right time. Lucky, lucky you.
With this article, we skirt around the droves of subscription services (Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, GameClub, Hatch, and all of their friends) which have launched onto mobile platforms over the years. We also don't factor in things like Steam Link or Google Stadia which allow streaming to handheld devices - and would open up this list to almost every game under the sun.
What that means is that our list is a finely curated list of brilliant, fresh titles which you can download and play without subscribing to, or installing, any third-party initiative. Of course, there are some great games on those services, but, let's focus on the stuff that you can grab right now.
This week we've got a beautiful stop-motion adventure game which has finally made its way to mobile, a Western-themed quickfire shooter which will challenge your aim and timing and no less than two games revolving around felines, goodness me.
Remember, if you're looking to check through some of our previous selections then you can always do that at our Games of The Week Hub, it's a great way to find games to fill out that empty storage space on your phone. Or, if you like your news in bitesize chunks, delivered straight to your palm then maybe follow us on Twitter or join our Discord.
Anyway, without any further delay, click on the big, blue button below to find out more about what we believe to be the top five of the games which released on mobile over the last week
1
Bright Paw
Bright Paw is the latest game to come out of publishing house Rogue Games. It's a mystery puzzler where you take on the role of a cat who is attempting to solve, and avenge the murder of its owner. You're guided through the story by a mysterious narrator as you solve isometric puzzles - and find plenty of secrets - in your quest for revenge.
2
Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower
Tatical combat title Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower has released onto both major mobile storefronts and it is definitely one to check out of you're a fan of the franchise. It's a free to play dive into the grimdark work that challenges you to ascent the titular silver tower with a set of specific champion units. This means that it plays out more like a classic, specialist RPG meets tactical game, rather than the modern auto-chess trends.
What is really nice to see is that developers Perchang remain specifically committed to the chronologically earlier Warhammer setting, which certainly seems to be passed over for the 40k setting. It's free to play on both Google Play and the App Store, so why not check it out?
3
Nameless Cat
Our second cat-based title is the stunnng "A Nameless Cat" a pixel-art platformer with a compelling story and absolutely beautiful setting. You'll guide the story-centric cat as it journies back through a mysterious world in order to try to return home to its family.
Its absolutely stunning and well worth your time, and you can grab it for free on Google Play right now.
4
Dead Eye Deputy
Dead Eye Deputy is an incredibly fast-paced little on-rails shooter which tests your reflexes and spacial awareness. While your character will move automatically you'll have to carefully touch the screen to come out of cover and then drag the reticle over the enemies, of objects that you want to shoot. The animation loops aren't the greatest, but there's a big charm to be found here that makes the game reminiscent of arcade-champion Time Crisis.
We've not actually got any footage of this one, but as the game is free to play there's no harm in checking it out on the store pages.
5
Truberbrook
Trüberbrook has finally made its way over to mobile platforms, and it has been well worth the wait. The stunning, stop-motion point and click adventure game is a must-have for fans of the genre, and is almost certainly going to be one that sticks with you as a favourite due to its bizarre sci-fi, mystery setting.
