Match-three puzzlers on mobile aren't exactly hard to come by. There are so many to choose from with more being released all the time. Blox is the latest to enter the fray and is available now for iOS and aims for a different approach to many of its match-three brethren.

Instead of the usual exuberant effects we're accustomed to when making matches – where every three you find is celebrated with a fireworks display – Blox is intended to much more understated. Instead, it opts for a very clean-looking minimalistic approach. Now, depending on why you enjoy match-three that lack of animation might not appeal to you.

But if you just enjoy the simple pleasure of matching up colours, then it might be worth trying. Blox is intended to be more meditative, allowing players to zone out as they find matches. It does a little more to mix up the formula beyond aiming for more Zen however by adding its own spin on the ruleset.

Instead of having multiple levels, Blox just has a randomised set of tiles where your only aim is to beat your high score. There will be blocks of various colours on the screen and, of course, you'll need to have three of them touching to clear those tiles and build your score. However, whenever you move a block of one colour, all those that match will also move in that direction if they can.

This adds an additional layer of strategy to proceedings as you'll need to bear in mind where all of the blocks will end up instead of just one. You're free to move the blocks around with only one thing to remember, whenever you move a block, more will spawn.

The game will be over when there are no free spaces to add blocks, so you'll need to keep the board as clear as possible if you're looking to build a high score.

Blox is available now over on the App Store. It's a free-to-play game with in-app purchases.
