Free Fire Max is an advanced version of the most-downloaded mobile game of 2019, Garena Free Fire. It delivers higher-quality visuals across the board, though with higher fidelity comes greater demands on your device.

It's an interesting, though not unprecedented, move. The closest comparison I can think of is PUBG Mobile's 'Lite' version, which reduced map sizes and player counts to work with lower-spec devices. Max is obviously pushing things in the opposite direction, though.

Free Fire Club notes that smaller effects triggered by special skills have also received a noticeable upgrade, suggesting that the enhancements extend beyond, for example, a bump in resolution or stability.

Your current Garena Free Fire account – including your skins and rank – will, according to Free Fire Club, carry over to Free Fire Max. The recent trial version came in at just under 1 GB, but it's unclear as to whether that is indicative of the full version's size.

Sportskeeda claims that Max also benefits from improved draw distances and an updated user interface.

There's currently no set launch date, though it reportedly appeared on the Latam sever not long back to allow for a small beta test. While the initial test arrived for Android only, Free Fire Max is also said to be heading to iOS.

We don't yet have a list of compatible devices, and that's obviously the most pressing matter of all. It's perhaps surprising to see Garena go this route considering so much of Free Fire's success stems from it being highly-optimised for older and low-spec devices. More options are (almost) always a good thing, though.

We've reached out to Garena for official info regarding the upcoming launch.

In the meantime, you'll find Garena Free Fire available for download now as a free-to-play title from the App Store and Google Play.
