Zombie games are ten a penny on mobile, and that seems to have been the case for a fair while now. To stand out in such a crowded market, they either have to offer some noteworthy new ideas or serve up an especially polished package.

Don Zombie is the latest contender to enter the arena, aiming to deliver some zombie-blasting action with great flair. You play as Don, a former Colonel, whose goal in life is to decimate the zombie menace one shotgun shell at a time.

With a varied assortment of weaponry at your disposal – including traps, vehicles, explosives, and all manner of guns – you'll tear through over 100 levels and gradually rid the world of zombies for good.

What drew me to this one was its strange sense of style and character designs. The Colonel is far from light on his feet; in fact, he doesn't appear to believe in running, even when faced with a horde of ravenous zombies. Truth be told, though, I quite enjoy watching him plod along with his oversized revolver in hand.

I was also surprised to see the addition of faster-paced vehicle sections where you'll have to jump over hazards and shoot some zombies from the comfort of the driver's seat. Later on, there are even huge railguns to use and bipedal walkers to pilot.

If you've worked your way through the campaign and fancy a steeper challenge, there's an arena mode to get stuck into. And with it being a free-to-play title, you can expect the usual daily challenges to attempt and rewards to collect.

Don Zombie is available for download now from both the App Store and Google Play.
