Hello again and welcome to the latest entry in our long-running GAMES OF THE WEEK series. If you're looking for the best 5 games which have hit the iPhone, iPad or Android stores this week then you've landed yourself at the exact right place at just the right time.

With this article, we skirt around the droves of subscription services (Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, GameClub, Hatch, Playond et cetera) which have launched onto mobile platforms, and we also don't factor in things like Steam Link or Google Stadia which allow streaming to handheld devices. That means that our list is a finely curated list of brilliant, fresh titles which you can download and play without subscribing to, or installing, any third-party initiative. Of course, there are some great games on those services, but, let's focus on the stuff that you can grab right now.

This week there's been quite an interesting selection, from shooter through to a word game about words which don't exist in other languages. There's plenty more too, so make sure to check them all out.

Remember, if you're looking to check through some of our previous selections then you can always do that at our Games of The Week Hub, it's a great way to find games to fill out that empty storage space on your phone. Or, if you like your news in bitesize chunks, delivered straight to your palm then maybe follow us on Twitter.

Anyway, without any further delay, click through on the big, blue button below to find out more about the 5 best new games for mobile this week

Sticky Terms

Available on: iOS
Genre: Word game

Sticky Terms

The creator of Chessplode is back and this time they bring with them an interesting word game all about words which only exist within one language

That's right, Sticky Terms is all about those oddly specific little phrases which answer for very specific terms - slang, sometimes, but mostly words that have had unique definitions such that they simply needed to come into existence. It's an interesting little game for fans of linguistics, and it's also free, which is a great price.

Battle Racing Stars

Publisher: Halfbrick Studios
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Endless running, Racing
Find out more about Battle Racing Stars
Battle Racing Stars

Halfbrick Studios are back. I mean, they didn't really go away, but for somebody like me - who existed outside of mobile games for most of my career - we sometimes don't realise quite how present the development cycle needs us to be. Battle Racing Stars is their latest game, and it's a return to Raskull's 2D racing, but with all of the learnings of Jetpack Joyride.

It's another free one, so why not swing over and give it a go?

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Publisher: Konami
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, Adventure, RPG
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Konami is continuing their onslaught of latching onto mobile, however, I don't think anybody expected a port of their late-90s Castlevania outing to appear. Maybe we summoned Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with all of our mutterings of 'Metroidvania' over the last decade, or maybe Konami are tinkering with revisiting some of their earlier games. Either way, one of the earliest examples of non-linear action-platformer is now available for both Google Play and the App Store.

It is a premium title. But it's less than a fiver and - frankly - any money toward Konami's mobile effort might well nudge them toward a handheld Bishi Bashi outing.

Interestingly Konami didn't release a trailer for this launch, so here's a trailer for "Castlevania Requiem: Symphony of the Night & Rondo of Blood" - just imagine it without the Rondo content, job done.

War Tortoise 2

Publisher: Foursaken Media
Available on: iOS
Genre: Shooter
Find out more about War Tortoise 2
War Tortoise 2

The first War Tortoise was memorable for multiple reasons... but the name was definitely one of them. Now we've got War Tortoise 2 and, well, the name is back, but there's also been a massive amount of improvements made to the original's formula.

War Tortoise 2 is an 'idle exploration shooter' as the first entry was. For those of you wondering how those words (a very active verb and... a very idle verb) slot together then, well, it's simple. Your cannon-strapped tortoise does all of the combat work for you, while you refine, tweak and tinker with the elements going on behind the scenes. It's cinematic, it's fun, and it's got a silly premise. It's also free, and you can't go wrong at that price.

The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross

Publisher: Netmarble
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: RPG
The Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross

Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross is definitely a looker. It's also a gacha RPG based off of an existing IP. But, from what we're told by  resident anime-opinion-haver Dave, it's not a bad little game at all.

As a matter of fact, it's incredibly cinematic, and it's lovely to look at. It's complete with all the sweeping orchestral battle music and wacky, over-the-top action that we've come to expect from anime adaptations, but it all seems to just fit together a little better than other IPs have managed to. Style over photorealism isn't just better for the longevity of a product, but it also really helps games stand out from their competitors - Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross is oozing style.
