Hello again and welcome to the latest entry in our long-running GAMES OF THE WEEK series. If you're looking for the best 5 games which have hit the iPhone, iPad or Android stores this week then you've landed yourself at the exact right place at just the right time.

With this article, we skirt around the droves of subscription services (Apple Arcade, Google Play Pass, GameClub, Hatch, Playond et cetera) which have launched onto mobile platforms, and we also don't factor in things like Steam Link or Google Stadia which allow streaming to handheld devices. That means that our list is a finely curated list of brilliant, fresh titles which you can download and play without subscribing to, or installing, any third-party initiative. Of course, there are some great games on those services, but, let's focus on the stuff that you can grab right now.

This week there's been a surprising amount of classic-RPG style games, including two from massive IPs. There's also been a charming, calming tower defence title and a fantastic scientific simulation game.

Remember, if you're looking to check through some of our previous selections then you can always do that at our Games of The Week Hub, it's a great way to find games to fill out that empty storage space on your phone. Or, if you like your news in bitesize chunks, delivered straight to your palm then maybe follow us on Twitter.

Anyway, without any further delay, click through on the big, blue button below to find out more about the 5 best new games for mobile this week

Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed

We've been watching Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed since it went into soft launch late last year. It's an interesting idea: a fusion of hero collecting RPG with the iconic Lego brand.

As it turns out, it actually works really well. There's a decent variety of minifigs to collect, and the game doesn't hesitate to throw you straight into the action, eager to demonstrate that the classic party-vs-party combat is something that it can handle from the outset.

Knighthood

Publisher: Midoki
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Action, RPG

Next up it's another RPG. This time it's King's latest offering, Knighthood, which is an extremely stylish dive into a streamlined adventure-RPG.

It's streamlined in the manner that you might imagine though. Unlike the Bravely series, there's not an attempt to thin-down the grind of levelling up, instead, the game is almost entirely focused on the aRPG-style grind of bashing sharp things into enemies until they fall over... but, wait, hold up.

It's all done in a really fun way, you basically just tap (or swipe) the screen to attack, while you use up special moves and carefully select which order to defeat enemies. The story may have been stripped down, but there's a design gone into weapons and equipment upgrades - even so much that your character's appearance shifts with every equipment change.

Dragon Quest of the Stars

And to finish up the RPG trilogy for this week we've got a mobile outing for the long-running Dragon Quest series in Dragon Quest of the Stars - a thoroughly confusing name.

For the description of this one, I'll point you in the direction of Dave's recent post about it as a great RPG with an odd subscription option, where he says the following of it:

"Dragon Quest of the Stars is a fairly typical approach to the gacha RPG formula but done so with an incredible amount of polish, and the expected amount of Dragon Quest/Akira Toriyama charm. Everything in the Dragon Quest universe is cute and endearing in the weirdest way, partially thanks to Akira Toriyama's artwork, and it's hard not to get caught up in everything: The story, the characters you meet, the places you go, and despite DQS clearly being a cut-down Dragon Quest experience, it manages to capture much of the same experience."

Eri's Forest

Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Tower defence

Eri's Forest

The tower defence genre is incredibly well-worn these days. So when a game comes along and does a great job of it, it really stands out. Eri's Forest is a brilliant little tower defence, and that's because of the high level of care which has gone into its design and setting.

You take on the role of a forest guardian, using mana to deploy growths on trees which are under attack from mind-controlled forest wildlife. Because your battlefield is on a vertical surface there's a lot of clever ways in which Eri's Forest changes the traditional formula - for example, the second tower you unlock drips fluid from the tree's bark which slows creatures down when they attack. Not only this, but you the battlefield literally wraps around the tree - requiring you to rotate around it in order to efficiently defend it. It's also really beautiful, and the voice acting is far from offensive.

5
Dish Life: The Game

Publisher: Pocket Sized Hands
Available on: iOS + Android
Genre: Simulation, Strategy

Dish Life: The Game

Educational simulation Dish Life: The Game is a whole lot more fun than the title might suggest. In it you'll take on the role of a Stem Cell Researcher, completing quests while also caring for and developing stem cells. It's a clever take on the education game, combining elements of Tamagotchi and management all while actually teaching you about the science, politics and routine of the job.

And it does teach you, even just getting through the tutorial it had gently started teaching me the terminology for the cells, about what they eat and how they change and develop. Very interesting, and fun to play.
