The Olympics are happening this year, which means we need tie-in games or the whole event might as well be cancelled. Thankfully, Sega is on hand to provide us with one, Sonic at the Olympic Games – Tokyo 2020 will be available for both iOS and Android on 7th May.
Dr. Eggman has taken over Toyko, deeming it worthy of being his city since it's big enough to host the Olympic games. Sonic is having none of it though and challenges him to a series of Olympic events to decide whether Tokyo should be free or live under the tyranny of Sonic's old foe.
There are 15 different events you can take part in, which include the following:
- 400m Hurdles
- Javelin Throw
- Sport Climbing
- Hammer Throw
- Table Tennis
- Long Jump
A fairly nice mix then, I'm always happy to see events that go beyond track and field. Each discipline will be controlled with a variety of taps and flicks on the screen where good timing will earn you better scores. You can see this in action in the trailer above. In addition to the standard events, there will also be EX Stages that will have special rules to mix things up a little.
There are multiple playable characters such as of Tails, Knuckles, Amy, Shadow and of course, the blue hedgehog himself, Sonic. For a full list of the roster, you can head over the game's official website.
There's also a pre-registering campaign running at the moment that will unlock various extras if the different milestones are hit. These range from adding “Ocean View” as background music to Training Points and badges. Additional rewards have also been promised if pre-registrations exceed 500,000.
Sonic at the Olympics - Tokyo 2020 will be available on the App Store and Google Play on 7th May and you can pre-register now too if you'd like. It will be a free-to-start game with an IAP required to unlock the full game.Looking for sports games to play in the meantime? Here are 25 of the best available on Android
